Suppression of Shot Noise in Quantum Point Contacts in the "0.7" Regime
Experimental investigations of current shot noise in quantum point contacts
show a reduction of the noise near the 0.7 anomaly. It is demonstrated that
such a reduction naturally arises in a model proposed recently to explain the
characteristics of the 0.7 anomaly in quantum point contacts in terms of a
quasi-bound state, due to the emergence of two conducting channels. We
calculate the shot noise as a function of temperature, applied voltage and
magnetic field, and demonstrate an excellent agreement with experiments. It is
predicted that with decreasing temperature, voltage and magnetic field, the dip
in the shot noise is suppressed due to the Kondo effect.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
The Child is Father of the Man: Foresee the Success at the Early Stage
Understanding the dynamic mechanisms that drive the high-impact scientific
work (e.g., research papers, patents) is a long-debated research topic and has
many important implications, ranging from personal career development and
recruitment search, to the jurisdiction of research resources. Recent advances
in characterizing and modeling scientific success have made it possible to
forecast the long-term impact of scientific work, where data mining techniques,
supervised learning in particular, play an essential role. Despite much
progress, several key algorithmic challenges in relation to predicting
long-term scientific impact have largely remained open. In this paper, we
propose a joint predictive model to forecast the long-term scientific impact at
the early stage, which simultaneously addresses a number of these open
challenges, including the scholarly feature design, the non-linearity, the
domain-heterogeneity and dynamics. In particular, we formulate it as a
regularized optimization problem and propose effective and scalable algorithms
to solve it. We perform extensive empirical evaluations on large, real
scholarly data sets to validate the effectiveness and the efficiency of our

Josephson current in unconventional superconductors through an Anderson impurity
Josephson current for a system consisting of an Anderson impurity weakly
coupled to two unconventional superconductors is studied and shown to be driven
by a surface zero energy (mid-gap) bound-state. The repulsive Coulomb
interaction in the dot can turn a junction into a 0-junction. This effect
is more pronounced in p-wave superconductors while in high-temperature
superconductors with symmetry it can exit for rather large
artificial centers at which tunneling occurs within a finite region.Comment: 4 pages 3.eps figure
Policies And International Integration: Influences On Trade And Foreign Direct Investment
This paper assesses the importance of border and non-border policies for global economic integration. The focus is on four widely-advocated policies: removing explicit restrictions to trade and FDI; promoting domestic competition; improving the adaptability of labour markets; and ensuring adequate levels of infrastructure capital. The analysis covers FDI and trade in both goods and services, thus aiming to account for the most important channels of globalisation and dealing with most modes of cross-border services supply. It first describes trends in trade, FDI and the four sets of policies using a large set of structural policy indicators recently constructed by the OECD, including the new summary indicators for FDI-specific regulations described in Golub (2003). It then estimates the impact of policies on bilateral trade and bilateral and multilateral FDI. The results highlight that, despite extensive liberalisation over the past two decades, there is scope for further reducing policy barriers to integration of OECD markets. Remaining barriers have a significant impact on trade and FDI, with anticompetitive domestic regulations and restrictive labour market arrangements estimated to curb integration as much as explicit trade and FDI restrictions. Simulating the removal of such barriers suggests that the quantitative effects of further liberalisation of trade, FDI and domestic product and labour markets on global integration could be substantial

Comment on "Giant absorption cross section of ultracold neutrons in Gadolinium"
Rauch et al (PRL 83, 4955, 1999) have compared their measurements of the Gd
cross section for Ultra-cold neutrons with an exptrapolation of the cross
section for thermal neutrons and interpreted the discrepancy in terms of
coherence properties of the neutron. We show the extrapolation used is based on

An Efficient Approximate kNN Graph Method for Diffusion on Image Retrieval
The application of the diffusion in many computer vision and artificial
intelligence projects has been shown to give excellent improvements in
performance. One of the main bottlenecks of this technique is the quadratic
growth of the kNN graph size due to the high-quantity of new connections
between nodes in the graph, resulting in long computation times. Several
strategies have been proposed to address this, but none are effective and
efficient. Our novel technique, based on LSH projections, obtains the same
performance as the exact kNN graph after diffusion, but in less time
(approximately 18 times faster on a dataset of a hundred thousand images). The
proposed method was validated and compared with other state-of-the-art on
several public image datasets, including Oxford5k, Paris6k, and Oxford105k
